Fountains Abbey Ripon

For more information on the new Abbey View facility at this World Heritage site, see below

Fountains Abbey with Studley Royal Water Garden, four miles west of Ripon in North Yorkshire, is of outstanding historic and aesthetic importance.

Fountains Hall was built by Stephen Proctor between 1598 and 1604, partly with stone from the Abbey ruins. It was built for peace and prosperity, not defence, and has been attributed to the influence of the Elizabethan architect Robert Smythson.

The history of the Hall is much shrouded in mystery and many legends have sprung up about it, including it being a hiding place for Catholics during the Civil War, and being haunted by the Blue Lady.

It was not until 1928-31 that the Hall was extensively repaired with many internal additions. The Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth) often stayed there as guests of the Vyner family.

During the Second World War, the Hall and other estate buildings were used to house evacuees, including pupils of Queen Ethelburga's School near York. However, after the war, the Hall again fell into a state of serious dilapidation. It has been one of the Trust's major restoration projects since 1983, and over £800,000 has already been spent on it.

The hall is now licensed for Civil Wedding ceremonies and is regularly used as a venue for celebrations of all kinds.

Abbey View

This World Heritage Site now has the ability to accomodate your special event only a few hundred yards from the main Abbey itself. You could invite guests to the Abbey View facility for a team activity day, followed by Dinner and Dancing. For wedding receptions, there can scarcely be any more romantic locations in the country. Invite guests to your ceremony at the Elizabethan Hall, followed by drinks outside the Abbey and finally for Dinner and Entertainment at the Abbey View marquee site. There are only a handful of World Heritage sites and your event could be overlooking this one.
