Bishopthorpe Palace York
The official residence of the Archbishop of York, stands on the banks of the majestic River Ouse. Bishopthorpe Palace was built in the 13th Century by Archbishop Walter de Grey and boasts some striking features including the coats of arms of various archbishops set in coloured stained glass.
The Palace was originally built in 1241 built mainly with local Magnesian Limestone with the undercroft being constructed using stone from an old manor house which was demolished nearby. The Palace is set in nine acres of beautiful grounds with many rare and ancient trees.
